Contributed by Lori Craig as told by Peggy Johnson
When I had my first visit with
Aunt Peg, she told a story about Elizabeth
Clark Knox. She was the area midwife in Wetmore, MI. One winter night a man showed up having arrived on a railroad cart (the kind you pump).
His wife was some distance away in labor and they needed her help. She left instructions with the children that she would be back in a few days.
Upon her return she had to "hop" the train. The conductor caught her without a ticket and threatened to throw her off. She said she had children alone for 4 days and she was not getting off the train, she challenged him by telling him she didn't
think he was man enough to throw her off the train .............. he left her alone!
Great story!
